Your Reality Check 🔥 - Reality of the Music Business

What’s up y’all ⚡️ here’s Issue #12 of The Dice Roll 🎲 newsletter, and the second issue of 2024!

Here’s a reality check for anyone who’s forgotten or who’s considering a career in the music industry. It's easy to be dazzled by the glamour and lifestyle of the industry, but the reality is much different. The music business can be an unforgiving, cut-throat world, where only the strongest and most committed survive. Let’s explore the sometimes harsh realities of the music industry, and why you have to keep moving forward…

  1. One of the biggest misconceptions about the music industry is that it's all about talent. While talent is certainly important, it's not enough to guarantee success. There are countless talented musicians who never make it in the industry, and countless less-talented musicians who become superstars.

  2. The music industry is all about marketing and branding, and if you don't have those skills, you'll struggle to make a name for yourself without hiring someone else to do it for you. Which costs time and money.

  3. Another harsh reality of the music industry is that it's incredibly competitive. There are thousands of musicians vying for a few coveted spots in the industry, and only a tiny fraction will ever make it to the top. You'll need to be prepared to work harder than you've ever worked before, make major sacrifices, and face rejection/disappointment on a regular basis.

  4. Perhaps the biggest reality check of all is the fact that the music industry is a business. At the end of the day, the music industry exists to make money, and if you're not contributing to that bottom line, you'll be quickly discarded. You'll need to be business-savvy, and understand the many different revenue streams available in the music industry to succeed.

Despite all these challenges, the music industry can also be incredibly rewarding. There's nothing quite like the feeling of performing in front of a packed crowd, or hearing your music on the radio for the first time. If you're willing to work hard, and be both creative AND business-savvy, you can make a name for yourself in the music industry and turn your dreams into reality.
