According to Songtrust, “SoundExchange collects digital performance royalties generated by sound recordings on behalf of recording owners and performers. This is completely separate from Songtrust’s role: collecting royalties generated by compositions on behalf of songwriters and publishers.”

⚡️1. SoundExchange primarily deals with the collection of digital performance royalties for sound recordings. If you're releasing music on digital platforms like streaming services and internet radio, it makes sense to register with SoundExchange early on to ensure you're collecting these royalties.

⚡️2. Songtrust focuses on the administration of music publishing rights. It can help you collect publishing royalties from various sources, including mechanical royalties, performance royalties, and synchronization licensing fees. You can register with SongTrust at any time, but it's especially valuable if you're the songwriter or co-songwriter of your music.

⚡️3. BMI or ASCAP (PROs) are performing rights organizations that collect and distribute performance royalties for songwriters and publishers when their music is performed publicly.

While it doesn’t matter in what order you sign up for each, eventually you will need to cover all your music rights, so the sooner the better. 🎶
